Remembering Jordan Mason: A Golfing Legend at Beach Grove

Jordan Mason tragically passed in early May and is remembered in this piece by fellow Beach Grove member Jeff Norris, reprinted with the kind permission of the Club...

Golf is a mirror reflecting the soul of those who play it. The meticulous precision it demands cultivates patience, while the resilience required to overcome each course's unique challenges instils perseverance. Moreover, the integrity of self-policing, essential to the spirit of the game, nurtures an unwavering honesty. Every stroke, every decision on the green, peels back layers to reveal the true character of a person.

It is with profound sadness that we at Beach Grove announce the loss of one of our most esteemed champions and a distinguished ambassador of our beloved game, Jordan Mason. Jordan left us too soon, passing away on May 3, 2024, at Vancouver General Hospital at the tender age of 37. His departure leaves a void in our hearts, but his enduring legacy will continue to inspire future generations at Beach Grove.

Jordan's bond with golf began at Beach Grove, where he was introduced to the sport at the age of seven by his father. It quickly became clear that he was a prodigy. His remarkable abilities on the fairways led him to win three Junior Championships and four Men’s Club Championships, one of which he clinched as a junior—a testament to his formidable skill and early promise.

A fierce competitor, he was recognized as one of Canada's premier junior golfers. Jordan competed on the global stage, participating in international tournaments that honed his craft further. His exceptional talents secured him a place on Canada's national junior golf team in 2003, when he was just 17. Jordan’s prowess also earned him a scholarship to Washington State University, where he continued to excel and left an indelible mark on their golf program.

Jordan's influence at Beach Grove was profound and multifaceted. He was not only a beacon of excellence on the course but also a mentor who inspired countless young golfers to embrace the game and pursue their dreams. His spirit of sportsmanship and unwavering dedication were contagious; he instilled a belief in our junior golfers that they, too, could achieve greatness.

Beyond his achievements, Jordan was cherished for his quick wit, intellect, and his distinct laugh. He loved movies as much as golf and could tell you who got the Oscar for best actor or who won the Masters in 1975 with great ease (Jack Nicholson and Jack Nicklaus, respectively). He was a beloved member of our community, whose passion for golf and its values left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him. In a game where character is the ultimate prize, Jordan was truly a champion in every sense of the word. His legacy at Beach Grove will forever be celebrated, as will his contributions to the game and the club he loved so dearly.

On September 14th, there will be a gathering at Beach Grove to celebrate his remarkable life.
